At the same time, it is an essential component of a portfolio that positions BMW M Performance automobiles at the top of the performance segment. The BMW M135i is powered by a straight six cylinder engine with M Performance TwinPower Turbo technology, which is known for its spontaneous performance and high revving, plus a level of efficiency that is remarkable in this performance class. The technology package includes a TwinScroll turbocharger, direct High Precision Injection with central multi-hole injectors, VALVETRONIC variable valve control and Double VANOS variable camshaft timing. This 3.0 litre engine delivers a maximum power output of 235 kW/320 hp at 5 800 rpm. This impressive power results from the maximum torque of 450 Nm that is available between 1 300 and 4 500 rpm.

What distinguishes this engine from many others that use a turbo as a substitute for displacement is that it's keen to rev, sprinting urgently up to and past its 7000 rpm redline. The rear axle is comparatively short and the autobox programming aggressive, so you can get that lovely redline tingle several times in a sequence of bends and straights. On the autobahn, it's still accelerating hard beyond 140 mph. But performance was always going to be strong because BMW's spec numbers put the M135i at 150 pounds lighter than the 335i sedan, and its drag is lower as well. It sounds as good as it goes. It's louder and more insistent than a 335i at medium rpms, and less relaxing at a cruise. In the upper quarter of the revs it comes over with all the multi layer howl of the epic Munich motors of memory.

The sporty and elegant design of the new three door model, along with additional engine choices, are distinguishing features that sharpen the unmistakable profile of the BMW 1 Series as the recognised standard of sheer driving pleasure in the premium compact car segment. Powerful petrol and diesel engines with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology, the latest chassis design and rear wheel drive, which is unique for a vehicle in this class, guarantee a sporty driving experience which is reflected in the dynamic and lean appearance of the new three door BMW 1 Series.

The power is relayed to the road through a six-speed manual or an eight speed automatic transmission with a full-on manual mode and P245/35R18 rear tires. The good news is that the M135i will be available with xDrive and the all wheel drive stability it brings. So, that’s the theoretical side of the transformation, all of which is done by BMW’s M division. The reality of the work is that it produces a vehicle that is an utter delight to drive. The inclusion of BMW’s Drive Experience system means the M135i can be tuned to suit the driver. There are four settings Eco Pro, Comfort, Sport and Sport+. Frankly, Eco Pro is redundant it softens things to the point where one might as well be driving the entry level 114i and its 102 horsepower engine. Comfort ramps things up so there’s a hint of the underlying performance while keeping things cushy to the feel.
